In March 9, 2016, Taneti Maamau was elected President of Kiribati.
Mr. Maamau was sworn in as President on March 11, 2016 at the Kiribati Parliament House in Ambo. He is the fifth president since the country became independent in 1979.
In a national statement delivered in the Parliament by President Maamau, he said "our motto is to serve and to deliver and though there are many challenges that we will need to overcome, we will endeavor to do all that we can and we will do so underpinned with the values of good governance, transparency, and accountability."
President Maamau is poised to do sweeping changes in the country, as well as policies in education, health, social welfare, climate change, and poverty alleviation.
Outgoing president, Anote Tong, expressed heartfelt thanks and bid farewell to the people of Kiribati in his final news conference. He said his 12 years as president had been rewarding and challenging.
